
ifty-three years implementing and managing agricultural projects with multidisciplinary technical teams carried out in various regions, under diverse environments and socio-economic contexts: mainly in Southern Africa (23 years in Mozambique, Namibia and Angola) and Latin America (24 years in Uruguay; Nicaragua and Brasil). I have worked in two long-term projects with international organizations: in Mozambique (10 years) funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Agency), and in Namibia (4 years) leading a project of the EU Commission. As independent consultant, I have planned several private agricultural initiatives in Angola, Guinee Bissau, India, Mozambique, Namibia, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Rwanda, Ukraine and Uruguay; most of them aiming to the establishment of commercial agricultural organizations. Involvement in the private sector/agribusiness: as Executive Director of a private/public institution in charge of the National Seed Industry (INASE, Uruguay, 1998 – 2000); as Managing Director of a large seed growers’ cooperative (CALPROSE, Uruguay, 2004 – 2007), and as Head of R&D of a large commercial grain production company (MIA -Mozfoods Food Industries, Mozambique, 2007 – 2011) Many of the agricultural projects I worked for aimed to the institutional improvement of seed growers’ cooperatives and farmers’ associations: my duties also included the implementation of administrative, financial and practical aspects of these organizations. As extension/ instructor agronomist, I have had an extensive involvement on improving farmers’ awareness on farming issues: improved varieties, high quality seed, seed fields’ management, trading and marketing strategies. It included the implementation of extension procedures for groups (field days, participatory plant improvement, demonstration plots, etc.).
