Markay Berhane is an award winning Professional Engineer with in-depth experience in structural engineering, project management, quality control, construction supervision, client relations/communication and mentorship of engineers. Markay has strong engineering technical skills, combined with the management experience needed to lead engineering projects. Thirteen years of international experience working on projects in South Africa, Australia and East Africa and currently working with a German consulting firm in Mozambique. Markay has experience with leading engineering teams through the entire project life cycle from successfully tendering to feasibility report, concept design, analysis, detail design, final drawings (QC), contract documentation for tender, construction supervision and close out of project to clients satisfaction. Some of the construction methods used on his projects include incrementally launched bridges (ILM), monolithic concrete structures, simply supported multispan bridges, composite steel bridges and continuous pre-stressed concrete decks with arch supports. One of his designs having been awarded as the Structure of the Year (2016) by the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE). Markay is also an experienced in construction management as the RE responsible for the supervision, monitoring and administering of multiple projects of high complexity. Including: A bridge over river with difficult geotechnical conditions, requiring deep piling. A large Flood Damage Repair contract which entailed the construction of several new bridges (simultaneously) and in-situ repair of many existing structures. The construction of a high end multi-storey apartment complex in Cape town on a steep ocean facing incline. Personal Overview Markay is adaptable and has a multicultural background having grown up in multiple countries, having a wife who is French and son who was born in Mozambique. Currently learning portuguese.
