CONTACT is recruiting a Waste Management Officer Camps, to be based in Afungi, Mozambique.
Duties
- Answering to the Facilities Manager and the Waste Management Coordinator, the main activities of the Waste Management Officer Camps include: to monitor and control the day-to-day activities of the waste Contractor within the assigned zone on behalf of the Company; to verify that Contractor activities are executed in accordance with the contract and with approved procedures and method statements, covering collection frequency and routing, crew manning, competence, personal protective equipment, vehicle and equipment condition, load securing and housekeeping; identify any deviation from a contractual clause or approved procedure, stop unsafe or non-compliant activity, report it to the Waste Management Coordinator and support follow-up and closure of corrective actions; provide the factual field evidence, including photographic records, required to support non-conformances and contractual remedies; monitor waste segregation, collection, labeling and storage activities at waste generation points and at the Waste Management Facilities within the zone; verify correct waste classification and compliance with approved waste management procedures for organic, mixed, metal, construction and hazardous streams; verify the number, type, condition, color coding, labeling and signage of bins, skips and containers at each generation point, and require the Contractor to replace or repair damaged or missing containers; identify and correct cross-contamination at the point of generation, record repeat offenders and escalate persistent non-compliance
- Perform routine inspections of waste storage areas, skips, containers and hazardous waste zones; verify that collection is performed on the agreed schedule and route, with the correct vehicles and equipment, before containers reach overflow; witness loading, weighing and transfer, and confirm that quantities and stream types recorded on manifests and transfer notes match what was collected; track internal waste movements and support verification of waste manifests, registers and certificates; inspect satellite accumulation points in the zone for compliant storage, covering segregation and compatibility, secondary containment and bunding, labeling, closed containers, weather protection and maximum storage duration; verify that spill kits are present, complete and serviceable, and respond to and report spills, leaks and poor practices; conduct routine environmental inspections related to waste within the zone and ensure field data, inspection checklists and photographic records are accurately completed and archived
- Collect and submit accurate field data for waste quantities, segregation compliance and treatment activities; submit a daily zone report to the Waste Management Coordinator covering collections completed and missed, quantities by stream, segregation compliance, contamination events, container and equipment defects and outstanding actions; contribute to weekly and monthly environmental reporting by providing verified field inputs, and support internal audits, inspections and site visits; deliver toolbox talks and awareness briefings to waste generators in the zone, including camp staff, kitchens, workshops, warehouses and construction crews, on segregation requirements and common errors; raise awareness among Contractors and site personnel on waste segregation and environmental good practices; apply and promote the Site HSE Golden Rules and environmental best practices in daily activities, and work in accordance with permit to work, traffic management, manual handling and personal protective equipment requirements; immediately report incidents, near misses and environmental deviations
Requisites
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or related discipline
- Field experience in waste management and/or water-wastewater operations (preferably on industrial or construction sites)
- Basic understanding of environmental permits, waste classification, and wastewater treatment principles
- Good communication skills (English is required, while Portuguese is an asset)
- Ability to conduct field inspections and prepare clear, factual reports
- Familiarity with HSE requirements and safe working practices
- Ability to work in a remote, multicultural, and high-activity site environment
