Farm Manager

Volta is recruiting a Farm Manager, to be based in Gaza.

Duties

• Implementation and oversight of a 1,000 hectare farming operation in Gaza province
• Candidate must be able to use MS Office software to put together farm plans, budgets, and implementation plans
• Reporting to MD and board
• Strategic farm planning (new crop trials, crop rotation and discontinuing of crops, projected crop yields, labour requirements and crop feasibility studies)
• Financial and business planning (forecasting required expenditure/operational costs) in conjunction with MD, management team and directors
• Managing farm operations to tight weekly and monthly budgets
• Analyzing crop yields, operational costs to meet financial targets
• Ensuring that deadlines and quality standards are met within set budgets
• Oversight of soil reports and environmental studies to determine preferred planting programs and optimal yields
• Ensuring compliance with local food and health regulations and buyer quality standards
• Recruiting and training farm labor
• Irrigation planning and implementation (along with irrigation engineer)
• Overseeing land preparation, crop planting, maintenance of crops including weed/pest/disease control programs, harvesting, storage and delivery
• Equipment sourcing (leasing and buying) and maintenance
• Negotiating contracts with buyers and suppliers and marketing campaigns
• Security maintenance on farm
• Sourcing input materials (fertilizer, fertilizer pesticides etc…)

Requisites

• Preference for candidates with degrees/HNDs in horticulture, agriculture, soil/earth sciences, environmental science or crop/plant science
• Strong commercial awareness, problem solving, communication and team working skills
• Strong horticultural /agronomy/soil /seed knowledge
• Strong entrepreneurial and interpersonal skills
• Strong marketing skills
• Expected to have strong networking skills and provide good candidates for roles within the farm
• Expected to be able to present and interact with suppliers, buyers and banks
• A full driving license
• Languages: Portuguese, English and Changani beneficial
• IT: Intermediary Microsoft Skills in Word, Excel, Accounting Software and PowerPoint
• 5 years commercial farming experience as a farm manager
• Experience farming over 200ha of commercial maize
• Experience of farming fruit and vegetable crops and other cereal crops including potatoes
• Experience of managing a workforce of over 50 workers
• All candidates must be physically fit and capable of working well under the pressure and meeting tight deadlines
