CODE is recruiting an Education Expert in Primary Teacher Education and Participatory Methodologies (m/f), to be based in Cabo Delgado, Maputo, Niassa and Tete, Mozambique.
Description
  • Better Education through Teacher Training and Empowerment for Results (BETTER) is a seven-year, Global Affairs Canada and CODE co-funded project to support pre-service teacher training in Mozambique. Implemented by CODE and its Mozambican partner Associação Progresso beginning in July 2015, the ultimate goal of BETTER is to improve the quality of education for primary students by improving the quality of teacher education in Mozambique. BETTER aims to reinforce the use of student centered methodologies and promote gender equality in the project IFPs and primary schools, strengthen teachers’ skills to teach language and literacy, improve supervision and coaching for aspiring teachers during practicum, strengthen school management in placement schools, and improve the quality and quantity of materials to support language and literacy instruction. Through systematic monitoring and evaluation, and close coordination with the Mozambican Ministry of Education (MINEDH), BETTER will inform the expansion of similar interventions in the teacher program countrywide
  • BETTER is implemented in four IFPs (Teacher Training Institutes) in four provinces (Cabo Delgado, Maputo Province, Niassa and Tete) and in up to 150 project schools (20-25 per IFP). Teacher educators at the 4 IFPs (approximately 80), newly graduated teachers from the IFPs (approximately 1,200) and mentor teachers, school directors, pedagogical assistants, students and school councils at the 150 target schools (short and long practice) will directly benefit from the project activities
  • Education Expert in Primary Teacher Education and Participatory Methodologies for the Project BETTER (Mozambique)
The overarching project goal is to improve
  • Primary teacher education with focus on teaching of literacy, by adopting student centered and gender sensitive pedagogy in the IFPs (and primary schools)
  • Primary teaching with focus on literacy, by adopting student centered and gender sensitive pedagogy in the primary schools
  • School management and mentoring of student teachers at the primary schools
  • From 2019 to 2021, the project will continue facilitating capacity building on participatory methodology for teacher educators and pre-service teachers. This will involve training workshops, in-classroom support, and training supporting resources. This initiative aims to contribute to the following specific project outputs:
  • 1122 -IFP educators trained on child-centered, gender sensitive methodologies reflecting good practices in teaching
  • 1210- Increased capacity of IFP supervisors to help student-teachers apply teaching strategies during their practice
  • Scope of Work: In line with these above-mentioned specific outputs, CODE is seeking an education specialist with extensive experience in supporting primary teacher education in Mozambique for the period of July 29, 2019 to 31 of July 2020
  • CODE and the consultant would agree prior, in writing, the number of days expected for each specific output and based on the agreement the consultant will invoice accordingly
Duties
  • The key expected products of this consultancy are:
  • Training of primary teacher educators on adoption of participatory methodology:Design of a training program for teacher educators on participatory methodologies, in coordination with Associação Progresso and CODE
  • Preparation of a team of training facilitators, in collaboration with Associação Progresso
  • Support the facilitation of training activities in the four supported IFPs (Chibututuine, Chitima, Cuamba and Pemba), and document trainings
  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate the development of a collection of video classes showing good practices in teaching of literacy in primary education
Requisites
  • Advanced university degree in Social Sciences, Education or another related field
  • Relevant experience and expertise in the areas of teacher education and participatory methodologies in Mozambique
  • Demonstrated experience promoting gender responsive pedagogy
  • Experience designing, coordinating, documenting and assessing teacher educators’ training programs, in collaboration with MINEDH (in IPFs and primary schools)
  • Demonstrated experience leading development of educational videos in collaboration with teachers and primary students
  • Demonstrated experience preparing teams of training facilitators
  • Demonstrate ability to plan and manage teacher training activities
  • Ability to travel to the provinces required
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in teams
  • Previous experience working with CODE and Associação Progresso is a strong advantage
  • Time flexibility and availability to work at different time periods throughout the year
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to collect data and provide reports
  • Proven fluency in English and Portuguese is required
