CONTACT is recruiting a Site Archaeologist, to be based in Pemba, Mozambique.
Duties
  • Reporting to the Senior Territorial Development Manager and the Social Performance Vice President, the main activities of the Site Archaeologist are to: conduct and supervise pre-construction and construction-phase cultural heritage surveys (onshore and offshore)
  • Monitor contractor activities during ground disturbance to prevent damage to cultural heritage resources; implement, and oversee the “chance finds procedure” and ensure alignment with the cultural heritage management plan (CHMP) and IFC / equator principles / UNESCO requirements
  • Develop and maintain an up-to-date inventory of tangible and intangible cultural heritage assets; seek and manage permits for surveys and excavations related to CHMP, as required; liaise with and support project construction teams, including engagement and social affairs (SESA) and resettlement, on all engagement activities and grave relocation efforts; engage with affected community and religious leaders before, during, and after survey work and construction
  • Develop and deliver training and awareness programs for TEPMA1 staff, contractors, and local stakeholders on cultural heritage and chance finds – on site and other required locations
  • Build capacity among local stakeholders and contractors to support sustainable heritage management plan; ensure all activities comply with Mozambican law, IFC PS8, UNESCO conventions, and project-specific protocols
  • Develop and implement robust performance indicators and a monitoring & e (M&E) framework for cultural heritage management; prepare and submit regular reports on cultural heritage activities, chance finds, and community engagement
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with relevant governmental agencies and ministries to align on procedures and processes; develop scope of work and manage the contractors related to implementation of the CHMP and others related
Requisites
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Archaeology, History, Anthropology, Cultural Heritage Management, or related field
  • Registered/certified Archaeologist with the National Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DNPC), Ministry of Culture and Tourism
  • Minimum of 08 years’ experience in archaeological or cultural heritage resource work, preferably on major projects in Mozambique
  • Strong knowledge of Mozambican legislation, UNESCO conventions, IFC standards, and international best practices
  • Experience developing and implementing management plans and procedures (e.g., Chance Finds Procedure)
  • Proven ability to coordinate onshore and offshore survey teams and manage deliverables, including engaging diverse stakeholder groups
  • Proficiency with digital data collection tools (e.g., GIS, Power BI) is an advantage
  • Fluency in Portuguese and excellent command of English (written and verbal)
  • Fluency in French and Swahili is an advantage
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Adaptability and resilience in remote, challenging environments
