Senior Investment and Portfolio Manager


AgDevCo is recruiting a Senior Investment and Portfolio Manager, to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.

  • Lead investment developer and monitor on going investments
  • Portfolio management role supporting across the portfolio and helping to develop the pipeline strategy and managing risk (this includes the reporting function)
  • Operations including input to annual budget, overseeing project costs, where applicable helping to fundraise/donor report etc
  • Work with colleagues to lead the identification, appraisal and negotiation of a portfolio of debt and equity agribusiness investments (70% of your time). This involves
  • Origination and initial screening of opportunities (including KYC/AML)
  • With the Country Director and CIO, leading the commercial negotiations on the structure and terms of the investment
  • Carrying out or overseeing the full appraisal and due diligence of investment opportunities (including commercial, legal, financial modelling) and preparation and writing of required internal investment proposal papers
  • Overseeing commercial aspects of the execution, working closely with internal and/or external legal counsel
  • To provide on-going management / monitoring and evaluation and reporting on portfolio investees, to include
  • Being the primary point of contact for the investment
  • Providing (or procuring from within AgDevCo or externally) management support to help investees achieve their business targets
  • Managing regular monitoring and reporting to AgDevCo’s senior management and Board
  • Developing pipeline of investments
  • Work closely with the Country Director and Operations and Finance Manager to manage the day-to-day activities of AgDevCo Mozambique (10% of your time)
  • As a small and growing business the expectation is that the employee will be willing and able to do any work that the company reasonably requires from time to time, including, but not limited to: i) ensuring operations are in-line with AgDevCo’s policies and procedures; ii) contributing to internal and external reports; iii) engaging with potential and existing partners, donors, and investors with interest or business activities in Mozambique; and iv) in due course participate in fund raising activities
  • The Senior Investment and Portfolio Manager will be an integral part of a small team, reporting to the Country Director (based in Maputo). With respect to matters relating to new and existing investments, the employee will also work with the Mozambican Senior Agricultural Advisor and for operations and strategy the employee will work with the Operations and Finance Manager
  • Not less than 5 years’ experience in a relevant investment business (e.g. private equity, DFI, impact investor, commercial bank)
  • Experience of working in Mozambique in an investment role
  • Ideally with agribusiness exposure
  • Excellent analytical, finance, and negotiation skills (including familiarity with a range of debt and equity instruments)
  • Strong financial modelling skills (DCF, three-statement models etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Collegiate working style with a strong management capability
  • Ability to develop and manage strategic relationships with donors, peer organizations and potential investees
  • Ideally an understanding and experience of donor funding and development priorities in Africa; and their reporting requirements
