Description
  • Creative Associates is implementing Vamos Ler!, a five-year, USAID-funded early grade reading project with the aim to improve early grade reading outcomes in Nampula and Zambezia. The project focuses on three main areas of intervention to improve students’ reading fluency and comprehension in their mother tongue: 1) improve the quality of reading instruction at the early primary level, 2) improve policy frameworks and delivery systems for early grade reading, and 3) increase parental and community engagement in and support for education and early grade reading. The project has a main office in Maputo with field offices in Nampula and Zambezia
  • Position Summary: The Senior Community Mobilization Coordinator will be responsible for implementing field activities to increase community engagement in education and enhance support for local language early grade reading. S/he will help to create a generation of children who want to learn to read and parents who want teachers to teach their children to read, helping to contribute to a culture of reading in rural communities. S/he will work closely with school directors and teachers to help organizing reading clubs in Vamos Ler! schools, giving children more opportunities to practice and improve their reading in the critical early grade years. Other priority activities for this position will include organizing community events such as Reading Day celebrations and competitions at the school level, and community campaigns to encourage parents to bring their children to school on time and consistently and to create space and time for children to practice reading at home
  • Reporting & Supervision: The Senior Community Mobilization Coordinator will report to the Senior Community Mobilization Specialist and will be based in Nampula with regular travel to Zambezia
  • Position Start Date: Immediately
Duties
  • Organize and implement community campaigns to strengthen the community’s demand for quality education, and to increase parental engagement in their children’s education and support for early grade reading Support the Vamos Ler! reading team and work with schools to organize and implement reading clubs
  • Assist in supporting and supervising four local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) contracted to work with Vamos Ler! on community engagement and mobilization activities, ensuring that they are implementing on time and appropriately
  • Work closely with DPEDH, SDEJT and the Vamos Ler! reading team to organize annual Reading Day celebrations and competitions at the school level
Requisites
  • At least five years of community outreach or community mobilization experience, preferably working for an international development NGO
  • Demonstrated experience managing community engagement campaigns
  • In-depth understanding of community development, civil society and the structure and functioning of the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) in Mozambique
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Portuguese; fluency in Emakhua is highly desirable
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, International Development, Public Advocacy, or a related field
