Embassy of Switzerland is recruiting a Media and Communication Officer, to be based in Maputo.

Duties
  • The Media and Communication Officer (M&C Officer) plays a key role in designing, promoting and implementing communication work for the Swiss Embassy in Mozambique
  • The M&C Officer will help sensitize staff to the role played by external communication and its tools in informing the public, other donors as well as partners in Switzerland and in Mozambique about Switzerland’s aims and projects
  • The M&C Officer is tasked with any internal and external aspect of media communication work for the Swiss Embassy. Externally the M&C Officer will deal with public media in Mozambique and Switzerland and internally with the Embassy staff. Regarding the activities in development cooperation, the main aim is to make public its achieved results, its relevance and effectiveness. The objective is to disseminate what, how and why the Swiss Embassy is doing in the country, to the public, the government of Mozambique and other donors
  • The M&C Officer is responsible to identify media opportunities, key communication events, builds alliances with the media and a network with communication officers of partner organizations.
  • The M&C Officer reports to the Ambassador/Head of Cooperation. Internally he/she is closely interacting with the Heads of Domains and their respective National Program Officers - as M&C is an integral and complimentary part of Swiss development work also in Mozambique - and externally with various partners and target audiences.
  • Maintaining/managing/updating the website www.eda.admin.ch/mozambique including commission, writing and editing articles for it
  • Editing/writing of media releases and organizing production of publications for publicity work (including fact-sheets, success stories, other hand-outs)
  • Managing a functional photo library, database of contacts and archive of speeches and press releases
  • Organizing key media events (including conferences, launching programs/projects, field visits, roundtable, meetings/interviews, etc)
  • Generating interest in the activities of the Swiss Embassy with the aim of getting coverage in media
  • Networking with Mozambican journalists and M&C Officers of partner organizations, regularly updating a contact list of such media persons (journalists, editors, M&C officers, etc.)
Requisites
  • Good editing and writing skills, good social and networking competences
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese (mother tongue); French, German an asset
  • Motivation and interest in proactive work with media, interest for modern communication tools
  • Good contacts with Mozambican media and willingness making attractive approaches to media incl. reliable network of contacts.
    Knowledge of basic principles and applications of communication for development (C4D) tools
  • Strong knowledge of Mozambique and the local context. (Knowledge of the Northern Provinces an asset) High interest for development cooperation issues
  • Open mind, enjoying interacting with others, sense of creativity, interest for IT
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team and at the same time being able to work independently
  • Tertiary education (ideally in a relevant area: media and communications, journalism)
    Working experience of minimum 3 year in a relevant field (journalism (print or digital), management of social media or public relations)
  • Work experience in communications for development cooperation or with an international organization as an advantage
