Abt Associates is recruiting an Entomologist / DPS, to be based in Nampula, Mozambique.
Description
  • Abt Associates, a major American business and government research, technical assistance, and consulting company, manages the USAID-funded Vector Control Task Order 1. Task Order 1 will support the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control approach with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria
  • Abt has implemented indoor residual spraying (IRS) for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality IRS programs and gathering the most comprehensive vector control entomological data in the world. Under this contract, Abt will expand entomological monitoring to guide programs focused on insecticide-treated mosquito nets and IRS and continue to assist PMI in reducing the burden of malaria through IRS and capacity building in 22 African countries where malaria is endemic
  • Abt also will continue to support PMI in IRS monitoring and evaluation, as well as environmental compliance. Under the supervision of the Technical Manager, the Entomologist leads and manages the maintenance and quality control of the Nampula insectary, coordinate and conduct entomological monitoring activities on project logistics to ensure implementation of the all activities
Duties
  • Ensure that Nampula insectary is maintained according to the standard procedures with an active colony with high number of mosquitos to enable for use in the bioassay tests
  • Schedule and participate in all field entomological monitoring activities, collect mosquitoes (larvae and adults), according to the plans to respond the aim of entomological activity purpose of the Ministry of Health (MOH), National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) and the Provincial Directorate of Health of Nampula (DPSN) with the PMI Vector link team
  • Supports the team in conducting and coordination of field based vector susceptibility studies in selected districts using WHO test and CDC bottle assay methods
  • Assist in capacity-building efforts to increase and expand the skills of local counterparts and field team technicians and entomology field data collector by promoting field work training
  • Identify morphologically all malaria vector mosquito specimens collected in the field, using the Gillies & Coetzee keys
  • Ensure that data from all collection activities are recorded and well-kept and organized on data entry forms, database or systems of data storage, undertake field level data analysis and prepare preliminary monitoring reports based on standards for the Vectorlink project
  • Coordinate GIS data collection of all point of entomology data sources and understand the correlation between a specific vector malaria occurrence with epidemiological data as well as identify and define the main secondary malaria vectors in each monitoring sites
  • Ensure that all WHO approved guidelines, protocols, and techniques for mosquito collections and tests are followed by all team members
Requisites
  • Bachelors Degree in Biology (Biotechnology, Biology and Health) and scientific area related
  • At least three (3) years of relevant professional experience in the implementation of vector control and/or entomological monitoring activities
  • Experience with laboratory animal rearing is an added advantage
  • Experience in international development programs, preferably with USAID-funded programs
  • Knowledge about malaria control/prevention programming is very desirable
  • Well-organized, responsible, independent, efficient and able to multitask under pressure
  • Professional interpersonal skills with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Availability to work 100% of the time in the insectary and/or in the field as well as in the field for supervision and/or support
  • Experience in working in collaboration with national and international Partners
  • Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office, and good writing skills, statistical data analysis and interpretation
  • Portuguese and English language required
