CONTACT is recruiting a Field Ecologist, to be based in Pemba, Mozambique.
Duties
- Answering to the Environmental Site Manager and the Site HSE Manager, the main activities of the position includes: undertake routine environmental and ecology monitoring and ecological surveys as per company plans
- Support the review and update of company environmental and ecological management plans as required; coordinate external consultants/specialists’ field Ecological Monitoring activities, including mobilisation and demobilization
- Respond to onsite wildlife encounters and promote wildlife stewardship on site; support the implementation of contractors’ field ecological monitoring activities and monitor contractor compliance with ecology plans
- Provide ecological guidance for field operations, prepare and deliver ecology training and awareness materials; oversee site reclamation activities, ensuring all temporarily disturbed sites are promptly rehabilitated as required
- Drive initiatives to minimize/avoid site ecological issues, e.g prevention of fauna killing, identification and elimination of invasive species; support the onsite implementation of the project’s biodiversity and ecosystems services (BES) program; develop/update BES management and monitoring procedures as required; assure contractors understand and meet Project environmental and BES requirements, through advice, inspections and audits
- Manage consultants to ensure their ecological surveys and deliverables are well designed, accurate, on time and of excellent quality; continually review the level of project adherence to IFC PS6, and identify gaps or upcoming issues in conjunction with other specialist project resources, such as the Biodiversity Lead
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure minimal overlap and maximum efficiency on environmental and biodiversity monitoring; develop internal and external training materials to increase environmental fluency amongst the workforce and external stakeholders
- Support the environmental and social lender due diligence process through provision of SME advice when required; recommend environmental and ecological performance metrics based on project requirements and track progress; support environmental audits and implementation of corrective actions
Requisites
- Minimum graduate or post-graduate degree (preferred) in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Conservation, Ecology, Biology, Biodiversity, or any related subjects
- Excellent working knowledge of environmental and ecological monitoring techniques in remote environments
- Strong English written and verbal communication skills required
- Fluency in Portuguese or French is advantageous
- Ability to manage multiple contractors concurrently, including ensuring compliance with applicable contractual requirements
- Ability to work in fast paced environments with autonomy, solve complex problems and be solutions orientated
- Strong ability to communicate and engage with stakeholders on environmental and ecological issues
